Detect thoughts 5e1/23/2024 ![]() ![]() If the caster is targeting an unsuspecting target, he or she will only determine what the target is thinking at that moment. Someone casting detect thoughts will be able to read the subject's mind and learn what the person being interrogated was thinking. During an interrogation, someone who is asked a question will think of an answer but may choose not to share it. If someone interrogates the target it will be very easy to get the correct answers since any lie will be easy to spot and the memory of the correct answer will probably show up in their mind.ĭetect thoughts is supposed to only detect surface thoughts. You could argue that the target can try to save each turn that you remain, so it will probably be hard to remain for the full duration. My ruling is that if you succed to go deeper you can maintain this level for the duration of the spell. On this level they can no longer hide their thoughts, their only chance is to evict the caster by succeding on a saving throw. The spell does not give access to repressed memories, the unconscious and so on. ![]() Then, when the target have failed their saving throw and you go deeper you have access their current state - emotions, thoughts, memories that are strong/important/recent. However, I would rule that a target that understand what is about to happen can steer away their surface thoughts to something else to hide what they are thinking on (start to recite a poem in their mind etc). And even if they can figure out that you will target them with the spell, it will not hinder the spell to get you access to the targets surface thoughts. Just because the target notice that you cast a spell does not mean that they notice that you are trying to read their mind. There is a lot here that I interpret differently :)įirst, unnoticed reading of surface thoughts. What I thought would depict it accurately is scenario 3 at the bottom end of the flow chart.Īny advice so I don't break the campaign unfairly? Full disclosure: I am 100% in on rewarding the players for their use of detect thoughts, I just want to ensure it's fair and reasonable how we proceed. I also assumed it was reading deeper into the thought processes present (hence the interrogation mechanism). I assumed for that you could do it once and once only, but others have said otherwise. I don't like this" and some rationale behind why? If you're not leading an interrogation on the person, are you drilling deeper freely (as if fishing through their mind) or are you drilling deeper into their thought process? They know you are in there, so are you just getting deeper machinations of "oh no, they're in my head. ![]() Can you continue to use an action to go deeper again and again?.Once you've gone deeper into a target's mind and they've failed a saving throw I have two questions: The specifics I'm interested in are toward the end of the flowchart. It led to the creation of a flowchart for the situation, but left some questions open to interpretation.Įverything I've read to date on Detect Thoughts is that it's heavily open to DM interpretation (in classic TTRPG style which we love by the way) but I did want to gauge thoughts and advise on some of the mechanics. Recently had a situation arise in game whereby the use of Detect Thoughts came up, particularly on a target that isn't being interrogated or questioned (a bystander within range). ![]()
